What would you feel if you find a manuscript that contains the secret teachings of Jesus? For Geoffrey Smith who is a religious studies assistant professor, the word “excited” would not be enough to express what they feel with what they have discovered and seen right in front of their very own eyes.
He also added, “The text supplements the biblical account of Jesus’s life and ministry by allowing us access to conversations that purportedly took place between Jesus and his brother, James — secret teachings that allowed James to be a good teacher after Jesus’s death.”
Before it was unearthed by biblical scholars at Oxford University, it was thought that only its Coptic translation was able to survive throughout the years. The researchers have never thought that they would be able to find the Greek fragments of James’ First Apocalypse.
The manuscript found contains information about heaven and some prophesies of what will happen in the future. In fact, it even included the death of James. It also revealed the secret teachings of Jesus to his brother, James, whom many Christians believe to be only his cousin or just someone whom Jesus has a close relationship with to be considered a brother. Apart from that, it also contains information on the life of Jesus.
With the uniform handwriting in the manuscript and with the fact that the text was divided into syllables, the researchers believe that it was likely used for teaching the young Egyptians during that time to learn Greek. The fragments found also came from 12 vellum codices, which was buried in Egypt and was only found in 1945. So, considering how long the time has passed, many have already forgotten about this heretical manuscript.
Can you believe that it has been 1600 years before it was unearthed? Finding such a thing is indeed extremely rare.
